Spring Cleaning - Why should I wash my windows?
Angie's List: Why you should clean your windows
Spring is here and if you have plans to freshen up your home, you're not alone. According to an Angie's List poll, more than half of the respondents say they regularly give their home a good spring cleaning. The consumer review website suggests putting window cleaning on the top of your "to-do" list this year.
Clean windows will make your house more aesthetically pleasing, and it will help remove grit and grime that builds up on both the inside and outside surfaces. Glass that goes uncleaned can become hazy or stained and that will end up costing you in the long run.
Where you live can impact how often you should have your windows cleaned. Matt Swales, a window cleaning company owner, says: "If the house sits in a wooded area or near construction that is blowing dirt across on it, (they) may want their windows cleaned more often than a homeowner who's in a more established neighborhood with not as many trees or forest near it."
Angie's List suggests most homeowners have their windows cleaned twice a year in the spring and fall. The website also suggests cleaning your windows during a cool, cloudy time of day as opposed to a warm day when the windows will dry faster.
According to Angie's List, thousands of people are injured each year from ladder falls. The website does recommend hiring a professional for this job, but it doesn't have to cost a fortune.
Angie Hicks, creator of Angie's List, says, "if you are looking to save a few bucks, you can still hire a professional window cleaner but consider dividing the job up. You can tackle the first floor windows that don't require special equipment. Leave the second story to a professional because they'll have the proper ladder."
Here are some tips to keep in mind when hiring a professional:
- Check insurance: If you hire a pro, make sure the company is insured. A lot of window washing involves ladders, safety harnesses and scaffolding, precautions are essential to ensure everyone's protection. You need someone who not only knows how to clean glass, but knows glass and how to maintain it properly.
- How do they clean windows: It's important to ask what kind of chemicals and tools are used during the cleaning process, especially if your windows are tinted. Many companies will clean with eco-friendly materials upon request.
- What's the cost? Window cleaning prices vary and are often based on the number and size of windows, the time estimated to do the job and the complexity of the job. Be sure to ask for an in-home estimate first.
- Satisfaction guaranteed? Most companies will offer a money-back guarantee if you aren't pleased with the job. Some even offer a rain guarantee if it rains within a certain amount of time, and they will come back out at no charge to you.
